MANAV RACHNA DENTAL COLLEGE

(under Faculty of Dental Sciences)

NAAC ‘A++’ GRADE ACCREDITED

Curriculum – Department of Prosthodontics

Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes. It is designed such that students go through simulation and bench courses to learn the fundamental skills for treatment involving crowns, fixed partial dentures (bridges), removable partial dentures, complete dentures, maxillofacial prostheses, and implant prostheses.

First and second year:

This course enables students to receive didactic information and the necessary psychomotor skills to perform steps related to laboratory procedures in removable prosthodontics with special emphasis on complete denture. Foundation knowledge and techniques are taught by lectures, videos, and demonstrations that are correlated with student laboratory exercises. Students are taught at great lengths about the dental materials which are the backbone of all the clinical and laboratory steps of fabricating any prosthesis. The simulation exercises prepare students to provide care for a wide selection of patients requiring prosthodontic care.

Third year and fourth year:

In these years students are trained to treat patients in a clinical setting. Students are taught systematic sequential procedures for the fabrication of complete and removable partial dentures with emphasis on biomechanical compatibilities. Emphasis is placed, throughout clinical training, in maintaining and restoring function, aesthetics, and comfort of patients. Students are also educated in the principles of advanced prosthodontic procedures like fixed prosthodontics, implant supported dentures and maxillofacial prosthesis through lectures and power point presentations.

Post graduate curriculum:

Students are trained to develop fundamental skills evolving to more complex prosthodontic cases in the Advanced Prosthodontics course and clinics including implant dentistry, fixed and removable prosthodontics, management of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) and rehabilitation of occlusion. Courses are evaluated and updated annually for contents and are augmented with regular seminars, journal clubs and case discussions for a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Students are encouraged to carry out clinical and laboratory based research work.

Areas of research focus:

• Implantology
• Bio compability of dental materials
• Clinical research of metal free restorations in esthetical dentistry
• Investigation in biomechanical function of the masticatory system (teeth and implants)
• Clinical trials and Epidemiological investigations
