Q.Why should you choose Biotechnology as a Career Option?

It is a good time to understand that Indian Life science space is open and dynamic. It encompasses vibrant biotech industry, innovation entrepreneurial ecosystem, increased industry academia interface, which is expected to make the Indian biotech industry a 100 billion dollar industry by 2025.

Q.Why Biotechnology is a good Career Option?

It is one of the fastest growing sectors in India and is expected to play key role in shaping India’s rapidly developing economy. On the other hand many initiatives and schemes have been floated by Government of India over the past 3 decades for building human resource capital and institutional capacity for life science sector. The vision of the Government is to nurture home grown excellence. India currently holds 10th global publication rank and 18th global citation impact rank in science and technology.

Q.How did Biotechnology develop as a branch of science and technology?

Biotechnology has its roots in pre-historic times in the form of basic life sciences for e.g fermentation of fruit juices into wine, milk to cheese or yogurt, or that beer from malt and thus began the study of biotechnology. Today better integration within biology and closer collaboration with physical, computational and earth scientists, mathematicians and engineers can be used to find solutions to societal needs i.e.: sustainable food production, ecosystem restoration, optimized biofuels production and improvement in human health.

Q.What is the scope for Biotechnology graduates?

Biotechnology is multi-disciplinary in nature. Special methodologies are characteristics of this domain. Activities in this area have existed since several decades. In the recent past, this field has emerged as a major subject of study, particularly in graduate and post graduate programmes. Scope for students of Biotechnology for the coming years is immense. Incubation centers created by the government are also aiding towards potential production of human resource.

Q.How can I get more information about the B.Tech , M.Tech and Master of Science programs in biotechnology beside the web site?

  • Bioinformatics

Q.Will you consider my application for M.Tech or M.SC Biotechnology admission if I am still completing the fourth year of my bachelor’s degree?

Yes. You can still apply for admission even if you are still working on your fourth year of studies. You must still submit an official transcript (with final grades from   previous semester) as part of your application.Depending upon the success of your application, it is possible to gain ‘conditional’ admission to the program, the condition being successful completion of your 4-year/ 3years bachelor’s degree. Proof is required in the form of another official transcript that indicates your degree has been conferred.

Q.What kind of job opportunities are there after completing the Master’s Degree?
Employment consists of technical, scientific or junior management positions primarily in all the domains of Biotechnology in the private and public sectors, and other related fields such as the Biomedical and environmental sectors.

Q.How can biotechnology students get practical industrial exposure during their degree?

BIOTECH INDUSTRIAL TRAINING PROGRAMME (BITP) is a programme of Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, managed by Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL). The objective of BITP is to provide practical industrial exposure for six months to students to improve job prospects and to help biotech industry to identify prospective manpower. During the training some stipend is paid to trainees and bench fee is paid to companies to cover expenses towards training. DBT invites applications from the biotech students and requisitions from the biotech companies.

Q.What kind of support is there for entrepreneurship in the field of Biotechnology?

Biotechnology Entrepreneurs Students Programme, BEST has been Initiative of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) for entrepreneurship. The objective of BEST is to locate bright scholars pursuing master’s and doctoral studies in Biotechnology and Life science courses across Indian Universities and equip them with the skill and knowledge that is required to set up business enterprises so that they would consider entrepreneurship as a career choice and not limit their scope to mere employment.
