Polymer For Polution

“From environmental point of view, the chemical method is a sustainable solution for different water bodies. Among the chemical treatment methods, coagulation and flocculation are the most preferred one. It involves the formation of chemical flocks that adsorb, entrap or bring together suspended matters; more particularly those suspended matters that are so finely divided as colloids. In general, industrial wastewater contains suspended, colloidal and dissolved solids. They may be either excessively acidic or alkaline and may contain high concentration of organic pollutants. There are so many investigations underway to find solution for cheaper treatment, easy disposal and utilization of wastewater from different units in India. With the development of chemical industry, the organic polymers were introduced for the treatment of different types of water. Cationic and anionic polymers are extensively used as primary & secondary coagulants. The benefit of using polymers in conjunction with inorganic coagulant is low polymer dose, small amount of sludge generation, less ionic load in treated water and reduced dosage of inorganic coagulant. So, water management should strive for a method which will achieve separation of all kinds of contaminants like coarser, medium and finer with minimum sludge generation. Water related health problems are growing and according to WHO report in 2003, it kills more than 5 million people in a year with infants mostly affected. The problem is of great significance in cities of developing countries like India where polluted water, water shortage and unsanitary conditions prevail. WHO/Unicef said that “Access to water has improved greatly but access to safe water is still a major issue. Because of the difference in characteristics, they react differently in the environment. It is important to remove the colloids from wastewater to comply with the environmental protection laws from receiving water. So, water management should strive for a method which will achieve separation of all kinds of contaminants like coarser, medium and finer with minimum sludge generation. Therefore, need of the hour is to have universal package for removal of all types of impurities from various water bodies. The wastewater samples will be analysed for TSS, oil and grease according to procedure given in standard methods. PH and electrical conductivity will also be measured with the help of digital pH meter and digital conductivity meter. Turbidity, COD, BOD of wastewater will also be measured. All the synthesized polymers should be soluble in water. The structures of all polymers will be confirmed by FTIR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR techniques. Jar test will be conducted to determine optimum dosage of inorganic coagulant and polymers. With increasing population, the primary goal of water purification is to develop more efficient and low cost method for the treatment of all types of water which can be regarded as universal application.”
