“International Journalism: The Current State of Profession in association with Sputnik News Agency ”

In another initiative to enhance international ties and provide students the exposure to international discussions, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, FMeH partnered with Sputnik News Agency, Moscow, to organise an international webinar during December 2022. Launched on November 10, 2014, Sputnik News Agency provides news coverage of international, political, and economic events, targeting an international audience. Mr. VasilyPushkov, Director of International Cooperation, Sputnik News Agency and Radio was the key speaker during the session which was anchored by Ms Olga Dycheva, Head of Sputnik Hub, India. The topic of the lecture was “International Journalism: The Current State of Profession.”

Speaking about the journalism from an international perspective, Mr Vasily commented that there has been a vast transition in the styles, practices and trends of journalism over the years. “The evolution, if you can call it that, of the journalistic profession is happening so fast that we are not catching up. I am more pessimistic in regards to that, since I feel that the journalism which I was once taught about is now dying.” He added.

Mr Pushkov also added into the discussion the subject of communication in the Covid-19 pandemic. He brought to light how people realised the power and importance of being able to talk to anyone they wanted to right at that moment- via Zoom, or Microsoft Teams, or Skype, or any other digital media platform. He also offered insights on the present media market, how journalism is not a one-sided profession, and how students can be taught that every question can be approached from different angles and every problem from different sides.
