MRIU Sports Science and Rehabilitation Team Support Rio Bound Olympians

India’s best Olympics athletes Kynan Chenia (trap shooter) and Inderjeet Singh (shot put thrower) are being ably supported by Manav Rachna’s CESSaR Team

The Manav Rachna Center of Excellence in Sports Science and Rehabilitation (CESSaR) is a hub of activity these days. The Sports Science Team of CESSaR at MRIU is working with top athletes from a number of different disciplines as they get set to participate in the Rio Olympics. It is noteworthy that the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from August 5-21, 2016. As the days count down to the Rio Olympics 2016, the Sports Science team at Manav Rachna International University (MRIU) can see that the athlete’s intensity of training and focus on the technical aspects of their sport has increased 10 fold, and quite rightly so!

“It has been our privilege and pleasure supporting Indian’s best Olympics athletes Kynan Chenia (trap shooter) and Inderjeet Singh (shot put thrower) as they walk their road to the Rio Olympics 2016,” says Dr Amit Bhalla, Vice President, Manav Rachna Educational Institutions.

Over the past year MRIU sports science team has been working with the world’s best shooting coaches including Ralf Schumman (3 time Olympic champion) and Russell Mark (Olympic gold medalist). Jonathan Marc-Gillam who is from the UK and holds a first class honors and MSc in Sport and Exercise Rehabilitation currently heads the Sports Science team at MRIU.  He has a wealth of experience in training athletes who perform at the highest levels. Having worked with professional athletes in the UK in professional rugby and professional football, Jonathan is no stranger to the sports scene in India. He has worked with the most successful athletes including Abhinav Bindra (Olympic gold medalist), Gagan Narang (Olympic medalist), Ronjan Sodhi (world champion),  Geeta Pohgat (commonwealth gold medalist), Akhil Kumar (commonwealth gold medalist), Henna Sidhu (Asian gold medalist), Inderjeet Singh (Asian gold medalist) and Krisna Poona (Commonwealth gold medalist).

Jonathan states, “Our task at CESSaR is to ensure that we analyze all aspects of the athlete’s sport which includes physical, physiological, emotional, psychological, technical and nutritional domains. Our team uses a variety of sport science strategies to identify both strengths and weaknesses in these domains.” Subsequently, after the analysis, the team works collaboratively with the athlete to create a coherent plan to make changes which support growth and development. “Sometimes these changes are in the methods of physical training or recovery, biomechanical alterations, or it may be developing stronger strategies in sports psychology; however, we understand that these changes are just to fine tune the athlete’s already built-in ability to perform at the highest levels,” explains Jonathan.

With India’s top athletes becoming more aware of sports science and rehabilitation, the CESSaR Team is playing a pivotal role in helping our top athletes bring more Olympic medals and enhance national pride.
